– 01-04-19 DISCOVERY ! IF YOU START AT Aminor you can slide minors all the way up the neck!
– SO here is another easy solution to “where do I find that chord” ?
– Strings 1-3 – Aminor shape on these 3 strings is aug chord with root on 3rd string.
– Strings 2-4 – Aminor shape on these 3 strings is min chord with root on 3rd string.
– Strings 3-5 – Aminor shape on these 3 strings is maj chord with root on 4th string.
– Strings 4-6 – Aminor shape on these 3 strings is maj chord with root on 5th string.
– Strings 2-4 – Barr      shape on these 3 strings is maj chord with root on 3rd string.
— keeping this in mind, the 2nd string is 3 1/2-steps below the fourth string …

— keeping the above in mind, play the chords of the major scales starting in open form.
— Major Scale MmmMMmDim
— Minor scale: mDimMmmMM

– A maj or min chord is available on strings 2-4 anytime with a simple bar ! (root on 3)
– A minor chord is available on strings 1-3 anytime with a simple bar ! (root on 1)
– Strings 2-4 open are a Gmajor – DGB !!!!, then just slide up !!!!

This answered a question I had about intervals:
 – Is there a Major 5th (7 1/2 steps) that crosses both B->C and E->F ? YES
 – but it still only contains 5 notes (BCDEF)

– E F F# G G# A Bb B (E -> B is a Major 5)

– B C Db D Eb E F F# | (B -> F# is a Major 5) and it contains BC and EF (minor 2nds)

– Per GT session on 5.31.18 Dave / Ed conversation:
– The Subdominant = IV because it produces a pull to the I chord, as does the V chord.
– Usually the V chord = the Dominant 7th, E is the tonic IV is subdominant, Dom is V
– So Dave played this Dominant 7th thing, then the 5th or 4th down a string then slide down and repeat.
– Had a cool jazz sound.
– Dave pointed out the the V down from I (A in this case) is C I think and there is pull here also
– E is the I chord,  A is the V, V down from is C
– Cmaj7, Cmin7, IV up is Fq7 dom wants to resolve to BbMaj7 Bbmin7, E7,

Guitar Tricks Lesson Plan for: Marc Curvin
Skill level: Early Intermediate
Guitar: Electric and Acoustic
Desired Style-Favorite Genre: Blues and Rock
Problem Area: Staying focused on a few things/songs to work on to play near perfectly before moving on

Based on your answers complete ‘Guitar Fundamentals 2’, then complete ‘Blues Level 1’. Skipping around like you mentioned will leave wholes in your playing/technique, so it’s imperative that you complete each course. Consistency and repetitious practice is the only way to learn to play the guitar, so it’s important to spend time every day playing your guitar. An hour every day of systematic practice is excellent, but even if it’s only 15-20 minutes per day, just make sure that it’s every day and that you’re really using the time effectively.

Let’s aim for an hour! Here’s what to do with that time:

Objective 1
Complete ‘Guitar Fundamentals 2’. You may find some of the lessons easy, but at least play through each one to discover areas that need to be addressed. These videos present important building blocks that will make you a strong and confident guitar player, so don’t miss anything! Spend 30 minutes per day on completing this course:

Objective 2
Work on the three songs you mentioned that need ‘touch up work’ – “Let It Be,” “Dust in the Wind,” and “Don’t Fear the Reaper” and be prepared to play one of them for me in the live class. I will help you with playing details and tips if you need. You will always play a song better if you can play it from memory. Learn and memorize the first section of the song before moving on to the next. This will take some work, but that is part of ‘practice’.

Spend about 30 minutes a day working on these three songs.

Objective 3
It’s very important to play in time and steady with the beat. A great way is to practice with a metronome. If you don’t have one, use the one in the Guitar Tricks ‘Toolbox’:

Practice the Minor Pentatonic scale patterns in the key of ‘A’ with a metronome. I’ll give this to you in the live class or check them out in the Guitar Tricks ‘Toolbox’:

Set the metronome tempo slow enough to play one note per beat and alternate pick: down – up – down – up etc. Start by learning and memorizing ‘pattern #2’ on the print out I’ll give you in class. Your goal is ultimately to have all 5 patterns memorized. We’ll go over these with the metronome in the live Full Access Plus classroom. Spend 15 minutes each day practicing with the metronome. This will help your timing immensely!

I will help you with everything described here during the Full Access Plus online classes.
Once you feel comfortable with these objectives, let me know and I can work on your next lesson plan. Remember, you can always reach me be email:

dave.celentano@guitartricks.com

Or stop by my Guitar Tricks video office hours which are Wednesdays 5:30-7:30pm, Thursdays 2:00-4:00pm, and Fridays 5:00-7:00pm (all times are Pacific Standard/Daylight Time) and ask your questions here live.

Best of success with your guitar!

Your guitar coach,
Dave Celentano
